Over 580,000 international students studied in the U . S . during the 2002-2003 school year, representing 4.6% of the near 13,000,000 students enrolled in U.S. institutions of higher education. After years of healthy growth, this slight 0.6% increase from the previous year's total reflects the increasing difficulty and discomfort experienced by international students in the U . S . as well as the lasting impact of the tragic events of September 11th, 2001 and the Patriot Act.
According to Allan E. Goodman, President and CEO of the Institute of International Education , "International educational exchange has never been more important for the United States . Foreign students bring intellectual, economic and cultural benefits to our campuses and communities." The Their leading countries of origin for foreign students are India , China , Korea , Japan , and Taiwan . Preferred Their preferred fields of study include business and management, engineering, and mathematics and computer sciences. USC, NYU, Columbia , Purdue, and the University of Texas at Austin enroll the most international students. (UCLA and Berkeley are numbers 11 and 39 , respectively, out of the top 50.) Consider reaching out to international students on your campus. Each UC campus has a special office to support international students. The list below provides contact information for these offices. There are many ways in which that you can get involved, including help : help coordinate orientations programs, volunteer as a conversation partner, invite a new friend home for a holiday, listen to their views regarding UC's role in nuclear weapons development, and/or identify a counselor who can answer visa, housing, and travel questions. However you help, you're bound to learn from them as well.
