To President Robert Dynes and the Regents of the University of California:
By providing management and oversight to two of principal US nuclear weapons laboratories – Los Alamos National Laboratory and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory – the University of California lends its good name to the creation of the most horrendous weapons of mass murder yet devised by man. In doing so, it distorts the purpose of the University, which is to educate students and advance knowledge for the benefit of life, not to participate in research and development of weapons capable of destroying cities, civilizations, and most life on Earth. No educational institution should be involved in developing weapons of mass destruction.
I, therefore, call upon the Regents of the University of California to:
Hold balanced and objective public hearings on the involvement of the University of California in nuclear weapons research and development, and in management and oversight of the nation’s nuclear weapons laboratories.
Terminate existing and refuse to bid future contracts with the Department of Energy related to the management and oversight of the nation’s nuclear weapons laboratories.
Allocate resources that would be spent to compete for management of nuclear weapons programs to services for students, such as increasing student financial aid, and to environmentally-sustainable programs, such as the construction of energy-efficient buildings.
Discourage University of California faculty, students and employees from collaborating on the design, testing, development and production of nuclear weapons or other weapons of mass destruction.
